Air cooled Aftercoolers are heat exchangers for cooling the discharge from a air compressor. They use either air or water and are an effective means of removing moisture from compressed air. Aftercoolers reduce the amount of water vapor in a compressed air system by condensing the water vapor into liquid form. A mechanical heat exchanger called an aftercooler is used to cool and dry compressed air so that it can be used in air-operated machinery by removing the heat and moisture created during compression.
A typical aftercooler unit is made up of fins that aid in cooling and tubing that can contain either air or water. When the aftercooler is in use, ambient air is drawn into it to help with condensation that helps remove moisture from compressed air while bringing process temperatures down to acceptable levels. Both water-cooled and air-cooled versions of compressed air aftercoolers are produced.

Water cooled after Cooler is able to cool high temperature compressed air from compressors down to 40°C or less while efficiently removing moisture from the air. As this is water cooled, it can be used where there is high temperature, high moisture and heavy foreign particles. Water-cooled aftercoolers are similar to air-cooled aftercoolers but are often used in stationary compressor installations, where cooling water is available.
There are several different types of water-cooled aftercoolers. An aftercooler in the Shell and Tube design is the most popular. This aftercooler is made up of a shell with a collection of tubes inside. Water flows through the shell in the opposite direction from compressed air as it passes through the tubes.
